Troop Equipment:

The troop owns a 60 passenger 1991 Wayne school bus and sufficient camping equipment; tents, dining flys, cooking equipment, axes, saws, shovels, lanterns.

Advancement:

Troop 243 is very proud of the accomplishments of its scouts.  The goal of every scout is to become an Eagle Scout, scouting's highest rank.  More than 70 scouts in Troop 243 have reached this pinnacle.  The troop's activities are centered on learning and doing the things that scouts need to do to advance.  A scout who has completed requirements for a rank participates in a conference with the Scoutmaster and a review by the troop Committee. It's the scout's responsibility to make an appointment with the advancement chairman for this review.  We present awards at a quarterly "Court of Honor" attended by parents, other family members, and invited guests.

Parent Participation

Parent Participation is not mandatory, but is always needed and welcome.
Areas where we need parent help:
Become an adult leader within the troop.
Serve on the troop committee, supporting the troop's program.
     Attend camping trips.
     Serve as merit badge counselor.
Help direct traffic at St. Barnabas Parish Picnic
Work at Troop's annual Flower sale
Please download and fill out a parent participation form

What is the Cost to Join?

There is a one-time fee of $63.00, for a scout's first year with Troop 243. After the first year, annual dues are $126. Most scouts earn all of this, and more, by selling flowers and working at our annual flower sale.

Each Scout in Troop 243 needs:

Full Scout Uniform - We stress the importance of PROPER UNIFORMING.  Scouts should wear scout pants (or shorts), scout belt and a scout shirt with proper patches.   This uniform should be worn to all meetings, and all camp outs.  You can buy uniforms at the Scout Shop, located in the Sam Swope Scout Service Center. "Experienced" uniforms can be found at yard sales, at Goodwill or at other thrift stores.  Our troop has an "experienced" uniform collection, available in the cabinet, in our meeting room.
The Official Boy Scout Handbook - "Bring to every troop meeting and campout."
Sleeping Bag - Warm to at least 20 degrees with an extra blanket in the winter.
Eating kit - Plate, bowl, knife, fork, spoon, cup and canteen, or water bottle.
Optional - pocketknife - Before carrying a pocketknife, a scout must prove he can use a knife, axe, and saw wisely and safely.  When proven, he will be awarded a "Totin' Chip" - a card that states that he has the right to carry and use such tools.  When a Scout has a knife he should also have the "Totin' Chip" in his possession.

A Scout is Thrifty

Troop 243 provides opportunities for scouts to "pay their own way".  We maintain an account, within the troop, on behalf of each scout.

Scout Account - Credits in this fund are earned primarily through participation in the Troop's fundraising activities.  Scouts earn credit based on the level of participation, in the activity.  For the recycling drive, credit is obtained based on the number of hours the scout and their parents work, the amount of paper (measured in inches) and cans (in pounds) they bring to the drive.  Credits in this account can be redeemed for any Boy Scout related expense, weekend campout fees, camping equipment, uniforms, etc.  The Scoutmaster should approve purchases, in advance, and receipts must be presented to the Troop Treasurer for reimbursement.
